RIB Skipper 1 Course

The RiB skipper 1 Course is an introductory familiarisation course for beginners to RIBs.  The Rigid Inflatable Boat is extremely popular all over the world. Generally it’s made of two materials, Hypalon and PVC. The PVC boat lasts about 3-5 years but degrades in the sun, Hypalon RIBs last about twice as long however, but they are almost double the price!  Usually these boats are powered by 2 stroke or 4 stroke outboard engines. The 4 stroke is the much cleaner (environmentally speaking) ICE engine and the more reliable. RIBS come in many sizes from small 2.4 dinghies to 15m RIBs that are used by commercial concerns to facilitate offshore oil and gas operations as well as coastguard and life saving / safety roles.  Consequently there is a huge demand for training for these vessels.

The RIB Skipper 1 is a one day course aimed at introducing the boat to a beginner. The safe operation of this vessel cannot be under stated. This course aims to be a familiarisation and introduction to safe operating practices. The following topics are covered by this course:

  • The RIB – Parts of the boat
  • Launching a RIB safely
  • The Outboard Engine – 2 stroke or 4 stroke

Description

The RIB Skipper 1 Course is a one day short course that has been designed to enable beginners to power boating to get a safe introduction to Rigid Inflatabe Boats. The course seeks to reduce the likely hood of purchasing a boat but not having organised and safe practices demonstrated before going on water. ISSA is committed to enabling recreational boating and safe practices by recreational boaters. This is a course that starts with Safety and ends with happy new power boaters who have learned new skills and have an understanding of what is involved in using a RIB.

ISSA RIB Skipper 1 Handbook (version 1) is available to purchase in the Shop and is a useful handbook for this course. It covers the introductory course in detail and is a valuable source of information for a RIB user.

COURSE AVAILABILTY: The RIB Skipper 1 course is a 1 day course – the course is usually run on 29th ,or 30th of each month but can be organised differently for Private Courses

Level 3 – ISSA Dinghy Course

ISSA Dinghy Level 1 courses are run at Phuket Yacht Club by staff and volunteers of the yacht club. The courses are aimed at youngsters from age 8 to 16 on the clubs Open Skiff dinghies.

Sail in Asia helped the club to establish PYC’s Junior Sailing Program and their Standing Operating Procedures. SIA were active in advisory work. We recommend you contact the club to see if they can accommodate your child in their Junior Sailing Program.

Inshore Skipper – ISSA Multihull Yacht Course

The Inshore Skipper ISSA Multihull course is a 10 day course that includes VHF Radio, Inshore Skipper 1 and Inshore Skipper 2.  We generally run this ten day course after students have done their ISSA Yacht Crew Course (4 days).  We strongly recommend that you do the Yacht Crew Course if you have learned to sail some time ago and or if you come from dinghy sailing.  Yachts and Multihulls require similar skills, and the Inshore Skipper 10 day course requires that you know how to sail in all directions, that you can reef, heave to, moor a yacht, come alongside and anchor.  The 10 days is spent learning navigation, meteorology, yacht management, engines, safety and a whole gamut of extra things which ensure you are a good learner skipper at course end. The Multihull course can be taken on a multihull throughout, but our strong recommendation is you complete the course on a range of vessels. The Zero to Hero Course includes all the above courses but also a 4 day  Yacht Crew Course and is exceptionally well priced!

Inshore Skipper – ISSA Motor Yacht Course

Yacht Crew – ISSA Yacht Crew Course

The ISSA Yacht Crew Course is great starter course for beginners to sailing or power boating. Our course teaches you to sail a yacht or keelboat in light to moderate boating conditions on all points of sail. The course is 90% practical and 10% theoretical. This means you leave us not being an assistant but knowing how to sail and being an active and competent crew member.  Our course is designed so you can then join an Inshore Skippers Course and gain further experience and competence.

Sail in Asia are very keen for students to gain experience in a variety of yachts and types of yachts through participation in this ISSA Yacht Crew  course.  We have keelboats, yachts, trimarans and RIBs in our fleet and with luck you will get a chance to sail all of these types of yachts by course end.
