The ISSA Offshore Skipper for Motor Yachts is a 14 day course that seeks to bring an inshore skipper to an Offshore Skipper standard. The ISSA M/Y Offshore Skipper Certificate is a course aimed at candidates who have completed the ISSA Inshore skipper Motor Yacht course and have about 800NM logged. The recommended duration of the course is 10-14 days to attain the knowledge and skill to be an Offshore Skipper.
An Offshore Skipper is a good navigator and quite an experienced skipper who wants ultimately to become a Yachtmaster Offshore Skipper, (a very experienced Motor Yacht Sailor). This course is the foundation course for the Yachtmaster but the practical assessment is less demanding and rigorous. In essence its the course to train Yachtmaster Offshores, in say, two or three further years.
The aim of the course is to increase the candidates’ competency, to take on the duties of an Offshore Skipper on board a yacht – in daylight or night hours, in coastal waters.
The Yachtmaster Offshore (Sailing) course is the highest level sailing course for recreational yachtsmen. The course is aimed at proficient Offshore Skippers who have the necessary skills, experience, knowledge and managerial qualities required to run a blue water sailing yacht effectively and safely.

The RiB skipper 1 Course is an introductory familiarisation course for beginners to RIBs. The Rigid Inflatable Boat is extremely popular all over the world. Generally it’s made of two materials, Hypalon and PVC. The PVC boat lasts about 3-5 years but degrades in the sun, Hypalon RIBs last about twice as long however, but they are almost double the price! Usually these boats are powered by 2 stroke or 4 stroke outboard engines. The 4 stroke is the much cleaner (environmentally speaking) ICE engine and the more reliable. RIBS come in many sizes from small 2.4 dinghies to 15m RIBs that are used by commercial concerns to facilitate offshore oil and gas operations as well as coastguard and life saving / safety roles. Consequently there is a huge demand for training for these vessels.
The RIB Skipper 1 is a one day course aimed at introducing the boat to a beginner. The safe operation of this vessel cannot be under stated. This course aims to be a familiarisation and introduction to safe operating practices. The following topics are covered by this course:
Safety
Knots and ropework
The RIB – Parts of the boat
Launching a RIB safely
The Outboard Engine – 2 stroke or 4 stroke
Fuel handling
MOB
Slow speed manouvers
Higher speed manouvers
Coming alongside a vessel.
Recovering a RIB on a beach or slipway
Anchoring a RIB
Towing with a RIB

VHF Radio is a very important safey net system that marine craft use every day. The basic vhf radio is now updated with a DSC VHF Radio that is able to send either analogue or digital radio transmissions. The VHF Radio Course is a yachts main safety system as it is possible to use in many situations that a mobile telephone would not! Consequently the radio is marinised (weather proofed) and thus rugged and reliable.
The course covers all aspects of use. Simple communications, professional channels, Channel 16, ship to ship channels and of course the Emergency and Urgency channel 16. Students learn to send messages that are normal and routine from yacht to yacht ,right thru to sending Mayday Relays, to other vessels, or coastguards. The VHF radio course is assessed by a one hour exam and by a course handbook with assessments and exercises.

ISSA courses are unique in that theory and practice are seamlessly interwoven and as a consequence students learning is vastly improved. Our Offshore Skipper course requires candidates to have mastered the collision regulations, navigation (DR, EP, Fixes, GPS, Course to Steer etc), tides and currents and have a good knowledge of the ISSA Inshore Skipper Syllabus. Students wishing to attend this course need to have 800 sea miles properly logged and hold an ISSA Inshore Skipper or RYA Day Skipper certificate.
The course is a 14 day course combining practical and theory in yacht seamanship and navigation for students who have completed a foundation course (Zero to Hero Classic) with Sail in Asia and also a 14 day course for students who have alternative accreditation, (RYA, ASA, AYA etc) or significant time lapses, since their original Theory was learnt. The 14 day course, prepares you for the ISSA Yachtmaster Offshore, – when you have gained the necessary mileage and other pre-requisites.
